Description

Ceratitis cuthbertsoni is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae and the order Diptera. Similar to other members of the genus Ceratitis, this insect is recognized as a potential agricultural pest, primarily impacting fruit-bearing trees within its natural and invaded range.

The fly primarily infests a variety of soft-fleshed fruits, including citrus species and various tropical fruits. The host preference makes it a significant concern for fruit growers in subtropical regions where environmental conditions favor rapid population growth.

The biological cycle follows the standard developmental stages of tephritid flies: eggs are deposited beneath the fruit rind, followed by the larval stage where the fruit tissue is consumed. After completing its larval development, the insect exits the fruit and drops to the soil to pupate, emerging later as an adult fly.

The primary damage is caused by larvae tunneling into the fruit flesh, which destroys the internal structure. This activity facilitates the entry of decay-causing microorganisms. As a result, infested fruit often drops prematurely and becomes entirely unsuitable for commercial sale or human consumption.

  • Rigorous sanitation to remove and destroy fallen infested fruit.
  • Monitoring adult activity using pheromone-baited traps.
