The African fruit fly (Ceratitis fasciventris) is a destructive dipteran pest belonging to the Tephritidae family. It is recognized as a significant agricultural threat in Africa, known for its ability to devastate fruit production. As a member of the Ceratitis genus, it shares biological characteristics with other major pests like the Mediterranean fruit fly.
This species is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide variety of fruit-bearing plants. Its primary hosts include coffee, mangoes, citrus varieties, guava, papaya, and avocado. Due to its broad host range and high reproductive potential, it poses a severe risk to food security and international trade, leading many countries to classify it as a regulated quarantine pest.
The life cycle of Ceratitis fasciventris involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly uses her ovipositor to insert eggs into the skin of developing fruits. Once the larvae hatch, they burrow into the fruit pulp, feeding until they reach maturity. After feeding, they emerge from the fruit to pupate in the soil, eventually emerging as adult flies to start the cycle again.
The economic impact of this pest is severe. Damage is caused by the larvae feeding inside the fruit, which ruins the fruit's internal quality and leads to secondary infections from fungi and bacteria. Symptoms include soft decay, tissue breakdown, and premature fruit drop.
