Yellow fruit fly

Ceratitis flava is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae, within the order Diptera. This insect is a significant pest of various fruit crops, recognized for its specific host preferences. As a member of the Tephritidae family, it shares typical characteristics with other fruit-infesting flies, including complex life cycles and specialized oviposition behavior.

The pest primarily targets tropical and subtropical fruit species. The larvae feed within the fruit pulp, rendering the produce commercially worthless. Common hosts include citrus, mangoes, and other high-sugar content fruits. The damage caused by the larvae not only ruins the fruit structure but also facilitates secondary infections by fungi and bacteria.

The life cycle of Ceratitis flava consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females puncture the fruit skin with their ovipositor to deposit eggs beneath the surface. Once hatched, larvae burrow through the flesh, feeding extensively. After completing their larval development, they typically drop to the soil to pupate, which is a critical stage for management efforts.

Symptoms of infestation include tiny puncture marks on the fruit skin, often surrounded by a small discolored area. As the larvae feed, the fruit softens and develops internal decay. Heavily infested fruit will eventually drop prematurely, resulting in substantial yield losses for growers, especially in regions where the pest is endemic.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control:

• Strict sanitation by removing and destroying all infested dropped fruit.
• Deployment of pheromone-based traps to monitor and reduce adult populations.
• Use of protein bait sprays to attract and eliminate adult females.
• Application of selective insecticides during the peak flight period of the flies.
