Description
The Mediterranean fruit fly (scientific name Ceratitis capitata) is a member of the order Diptera, family Tephritidae. It is considered one of the world's most destructive agricultural pests, known for its invasive nature and extreme impact on fruit production globally.
This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking more than 200 different species of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Preferred hosts include citrus fruits, stone fruits like peaches and apricots, as well as apples, pears, and various tropical varieties, making it a critical threat to diverse horticultural ecosystems.
The insect's life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female uses her ovipositor to pierce the skin of ripening fruits and lay eggs inside. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the fruit tissue, feeding and causing significant internal damage that often goes unnoticed until the fruit begins to decay.
Infested fruits typically show signs of stinging, followed by localized soft spots and eventual internal rotting. As the larvae develop, they destroy the fruit's texture, leading to premature drop and total loss of commercial value. High populations can lead to complete destruction of a seasonal harvest.
