Description
Systematic position. The Mediterranean fruit fly is a member of the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive agricultural pests, capable of infesting a vast array of fruit and vegetable crops in temperate and subtropical climates.
Host crops. The pest is highly polyphagous, attacking over 200 species of plants. Primary hosts include citrus fruits, stone fruits (peaches, apricots, plums), pome fruits, figs, and various solanaceous crops like tomatoes and peppers, making it a major concern for fruit producers.
Biology and lifecycle. The adult female pierces the skin of a ripening fruit with its ovipositor to deposit eggs beneath the surface. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the pulp, causing internal decay. When fully developed, the larvae drop to the soil to pupate, completing the cycle which can range from a few weeks to several months depending on temperature.
Nature of damage and pest status. Infested fruits often show characteristic soft spots and eventually fall from the tree prematurely. The feeding galleries created by the larvae, combined with the entry of bacteria and fungi through the oviposition puncture, cause the fruit to liquefy and rot, leading to substantial yield losses.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies include the use of pheromone traps for population monitoring, strict sanitation practices involving the removal and destruction of fallen fruit, and cultivation of soil under the canopy to disrupt pupation. Chemical control should be implemented judiciously using baits or spot treatments to protect beneficial insects.
