Malagasy fruit fly

The Malagasy fruit fly (Ceratitis malgassa) is a member of the Diptera order, belonging to the family Tephritidae. As a relative of the notorious Mediterranean fruit fly, it poses a significant threat to agriculture, specifically targeting various types of fleshy fruits within its range.

The host range of Ceratitis malgassa includes a variety of tropical and subtropical fruits. It is particularly damaging to commercial citrus, mango, and various rosaceous crops. Infestation can occur throughout the ripening season, making detection and control critical for sustaining fruit production quality.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female uses her ovipositor to insert eggs beneath the epidermis of the host fruit. Once the larvae hatch, they begin feeding on the internal tissues, causing rapid tissue breakdown. Pupation typically occurs in the soil, where the larvae migrate after exiting the fruit to complete their transformation into adults.

The economic impact of this pest is primarily manifested through fruit rot and premature fruit drop. In addition to the direct consumption of fruit tissue by larvae, the mechanical damage caused by oviposition and feeding creates entry points for secondary pathogens like bacteria and fungi, leading to severe decay and total loss of commercial value.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key measures include:

• Strict quarantine protocols to prevent entry into new areas.
• Sanitation, including the collection and deep burial of fallen fruit to remove larvae from the orchard.
• Use of pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult populations.
• Judicious use of bait sprays or insecticides when population thresholds are exceeded.
• Regular inspections during the fruit maturation period.
