Morstatti fruit fly

Systematic position. Ceratitis morstatti belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This small insect is a specialized pest that poses a significant threat to fruit and berry plantations, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where environmental conditions favor its rapid population growth.

Host crops. The larvae of this species primarily feed on coffee berries, but they also infest various species of citrus and wild fruit-bearing trees. Due to its host range, the insect is highly adaptable, making it a critical subject for agricultural quarantine monitoring in many countries that import tropical agricultural products.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the insect consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female deposits eggs beneath the skin of ripening fruit using her ovipositor. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the pulp, destroying the internal structure of the fruit. Pupation typically occurs in the soil, which the larvae enter after completing their development inside the host plant.

Damage and economic importance. External signs of infestation include premature fruit drop, rotting, and surface deformations. Internally, the fruit develops tunnels filled with larval excrement, rendering the produce entirely unfit for market sale or human consumption. High levels of infestation can lead to yield losses of up to 80–90% in affected orchards.

Control measures. Managing this pest requires an integrated approach that combines cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Key protection strategies include:

• Regular collection and destruction of fallen or infested fruits to break the life cycle.
• Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor population density and mass-trap adults.
• Application of systemic or contact insecticides during the peak flight periods of the flies.
• Strict adherence to international quarantine regulations when transporting produce from endemic areas.
