Description
The Mediterranean fruit fly is a notorious member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. Recognized globally as one of the most destructive agricultural pests, it poses a significant threat to horticulture due to its wide host range and ability to thrive in various temperate and tropical climates.
This species is a highly polyphagous insect, capable of infesting more than 200 different types of fruits and vegetables. Preferred hosts include citrus fruits, stone fruits such as peaches and nectarines, as well as apples, pears, and various tropical varieties like coffee and mango. This versatility allows it to maintain populations throughout the year in suitable environments.
The life cycle of the fruit fly consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female uses her ovipositor to pierce the skin of ripening fruits, depositing eggs into the pulp. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the fruit tissue, leading to structural breakdown and accelerated decay. The developmental rate is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for rapid generation turnover during warmer months.
Damage caused by the fly is both qualitative and quantitative. The initial puncture wounds facilitate the entry of rot-inducing pathogens, causing the fruit to become mushy and discolored. Heavily infested fruits fall from the trees prematurely, leading to severe commercial losses. The presence of larvae often renders the entire harvest unfit for consumption or export.
