Ceratitis pallidula

Systematic position. This pest belongs to the order Diptera, family Tephritidae. Ceratitis pallidula is closely related to the notorious Mediterranean fruit fly, which indicates a high level of economic threat and significant similarities in its morphology, behavior, and physiological adaptation to various environmental conditions.

Host range. The pest primarily targets a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops. It is known to infest citrus, various tropical and subtropical fruits, as well as several solanaceous vegetables. In these hosts, the larvae complete their development by feeding on the internal tissues, often leading to total crop destruction if left unmanaged.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females use their ovipositors to deposit eggs beneath the skin of ripening or mature fruits. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the fruit flesh to feed. After completing their larval development, they typically drop to the soil to pupate before emerging as adults.

Damage and economic impact. Infested fruits undergo rapid deterioration, making them unfit for market or consumption. The physical damage caused by larval feeding tunnels facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which cause the fruit to rot. Early fruit drop is a common symptom, causing severe yield losses in commercial orchards.

Control measures. Management strategies rely on an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

• Monitoring populations using pheromone or food-based traps.
• Strict sanitation protocols including frequent removal and deep burial of fallen fruit.
• Application of bait sprays or systemic insecticides during peak adult flight periods.
• Use of physical barriers such as exclusion netting to protect high-value crops.
