Spotted fruit fly

Systematic position: The spotted fruit fly (Ceratitis punctata) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its destructive impact on fruit production. Taxonomically, it is closely related to other major fruit-infesting species, making it a subject of strict quarantine monitoring in many regions.

Host plants: The pest exhibits a wide host range, primarily targeting tropical and subtropical fruits. It is documented to infest crops such as cocoa, coffee, citrus fruits, mangoes, and various stone fruits like peaches and apricots. Its ability to adapt to diverse environments allows it to thrive in various orchard settings.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their ovipositor to insert eggs under the skin of ripening fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the fruit flesh, feeding on the pulp. Once the larval stage is complete, the insect drops to the ground and pupates in the soil until emergence.

Damage and severity: Economic damage is primarily caused by larval feeding, which leads to fruit rot, premature dropping, and total loss of commercial value. Furthermore, the oviposition punctures and the breakdown of fruit tissues facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, causing rapid decomposition of the entire fruit crop.

Control measures: Effective management of the spotted fruit fly requires integrated pest management (IPM) techniques:

• Prompt sanitation by collecting and burying infested fallen fruits to interrupt the life cycle.
• Utilization of pheromone-based traps for population monitoring and adult suppression.
• Application of targeted insecticide sprays during peak adult emergence periods.
• Cultivation of soil around tree bases to disrupt pupation sites.
• Strict adherence to quarantine regulations to prevent the spread of the insect to new areas.
