Description

Ceratitis quilicii is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. Often overshadowed by other more famous fruit flies, this species is a major threat to fruit production and is recognized as a serious quarantine organism in many countries globally.

This pest has a broad host range, primarily attacking various commercial fruit crops. Key susceptible plants include citrus species, mangoes, coffee, and stone fruits like peaches and nectarines. The infestation can lead to total crop loss if not managed effectively through integrated pest management programs.

The biological cycle follows a typical pattern for tephritids: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs under the skin of ripening fruit. The larvae feed on the internal pulp, which causes the fruit to ripen prematurely and eventually drop. After completing their development, the larvae exit the fruit to pupate in the soil.

Damage caused by this fly is both quantitative and qualitative. The presence of larvae causes internal rot and structural damage to the fruit, making it completely unsalable. Furthermore, the exit holes created by the larvae provide entry points for secondary pathogens, significantly worsening the overall quality of the yield.

Control strategies are essential to minimize economic losses. These include cultural practices such as orchard sanitation (prompt removal of fallen fruit), the deployment of mass trapping systems using specific pheromones and food baits, and the application of localized insecticidal treatments. Strict quarantine regulations remain the primary defense against the spread of this fly into new regions.
