The African fruit fly, scientifically known as Ceratitis stictica, is a significant member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. This species is native to regions where it poses a constant threat to commercial fruit production due to its aggressive colonization of ripening crops.
This pest has a broad host range, primarily targeting economically important plants such as coffee, citrus, mango, and various tropical fruits. The damage is caused by the larvae, which burrow into the fruit tissues, rendering the affected produce unmarketable and susceptible to further fungal or bacterial infections.
The life cycle begins when an adult female punctures the fruit's epidermis to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae feed extensively on the pulp, causing rapid tissue breakdown. Upon completing their development, the larvae typically drop to the ground to pupate in the soil, emerging later as new adults to continue the infestation cycle.
The economic impact of Ceratitis stictica is substantial, as infested fruits quickly lose their integrity and nutritional value. The presence of punctures and larval galleries makes the fruit unattractive to consumers and disqualifies them from export markets. Without proper management, the population density can rapidly reach levels that lead to total harvest failure.

Growers are encouraged to use pheromone-based monitoring traps to determine population peaks, alongside the application of protein-based baits. Cultural practices are equally vital: strict sanitation, including the prompt removal and disposal of infested fruit from the orchard floor, prevents larvae from pupating in the soil.
