Cercopagis

Cercopagis (Cercopagis pengoi), commonly known as the fishhook waterflea, belongs to the order Cladocera and the family Cercopagididae. Originating from the Ponto-Caspian region, this invasive predatory crustacean has established populations in numerous fresh and brackish water ecosystems globally, causing significant ecological disruptions.

The biology of Cercopagis is defined by its opportunistic reproductive strategy. It alternates between parthenogenetic reproduction, which allows for rapid population growth during favorable warm conditions, and sexual reproduction. The latter results in the production of resting eggs that are highly resistant to extreme environmental stressors, ensuring the persistence of the species.

In the context of aquaculture, Cercopagis acts as a significant pest by competing for food resources. Being a voracious predator of smaller zooplankton, it depletes the primary food supply required by young fish, directly leading to decreased growth rates and survival in commercial fish ponds.

Furthermore, the pest causes operational damage through its morphology and behavior. The long, hook-like tail spines become entangled in fishing nets, filters, and screens. These accumulations of dead or dying organisms form sticky masses that clog equipment, increase maintenance labor costs, and disrupt the overall efficiency of aquaculture systems.

Management and protection measures for aquaculture facilities against Cercopagis primarily focus on prevention and containment:
