Taxonomic classification: The red-and-black froghopper (Cercopis vulnerata) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Cercopidae family. This insect is highly distinct due to its bold red-on-black aposematic coloration, which serves as a warning signal to potential predators, indicating that it is unpalatable.

Host plants: As a generalist feeder (polyphagous), this pest attacks a wide variety of flora. While it prefers wild grasses and herbaceous perennials, it frequently infests garden plants, including young fruit tree saplings, berry bushes, and various ornamentals, causing stress by sap extraction.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of eggs, nymphs, and adults. Nymphs are notable for producing a frothy, soap-like mass (often called "cuckoo spit") which protects them from desiccation and predators while they feed on plant sap near the soil level. Adults are highly mobile and are typically active during the late spring and summer months.

Damage and economic significance: The primary damage is caused by both nymphs and adults sucking phloem sap. This leads to reduced plant vigor, stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and structural deformation of new shoots. In heavy infestations, the overall photosynthetic capacity of the plant is compromised, making it more susceptible to environmental stress and secondary infections.

Protection measures: Management requires a focus on both physical and chemical control methods.
