Description
Systematic position: Chaetococcus bambusae is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae (mealybugs). It is a specialized sap-sucking insect that has evolved to thrive specifically on bamboo species, often hiding in protected areas of the plant's architecture.
Host plants and damage: The primary host is bamboo. The pest colonies are typically found in leaf sheaths and internodes. By extracting phloem sap, they induce chlorosis, stunted growth, and the eventual dieback of infested stems. Heavy infestations lead to a significant loss of structural integrity and aesthetic value of the bamboo stand.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of eggs protected within waxy ovisacs, mobile crawler stages, and sessile adults. The crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving actively across the stems.
