Chaetorellia is a genus of fruit flies belonging to the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. These insects are well-known agricultural pests that primarily target plants in the Asteraceae family. In particular, they pose a significant threat to safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) crops, as their larvae feed exclusively on the floral tissues, leading to substantial yield losses in commercial fields.
The biology of Chaetorellia is intricately linked to the phenology of its host plants. Adult flies emerge during the budding stage. The females use their ovipositors to insert eggs directly into the developing flower buds. This behavior ensures that once the larvae hatch, they are perfectly positioned within the nutrient-rich environment of the flower head to feed and develop rapidly.
