Strawberry aphid

The strawberry aphid (Chaetosiphon gracilicorne) is an insect species within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets strawberry plants, significantly impacting commercial berry production through both direct feeding damage and indirect viral infection transmission.

The pest feeds on the foliage, petioles, and flower stalks of strawberry plants. By piercing and sucking the phloem sap, the aphids extract essential nutrients, which weakens the plant's physiological condition and retards its growth rate, especially during the early stages of the vegetative period.

Its life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The aphid typically overwinters as eggs on the underside of leaves or petioles. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch, and the population begins to multiply rapidly through asexual reproduction, producing several generations per season depending on environmental conditions.

The damage caused by Chaetosiphon gracilicorne is characterized by leaf curling, yellowing, and developmental stunting. Beyond direct damage, the aphid is notorious as a vector for various strawberry viruses, including the strawberry crinkle virus and mottle virus, which can render entire plantations unproductive and lead to severe economic losses.

Control strategies require an integrated approach focusing on prevention and targeted intervention. Maintaining field sanitation, utilizing virus-free nursery stock, and implementing effective insecticide management are critical. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, remains a vital component of sustainable pest management.
