Description

Systematic position: The strawberry aphid (Chaetosiphon jacobi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that has evolved to exclusively exploit plants within the Rosaceae family, specifically the genus Fragaria.

Host crops: This aphid primarily attacks cultivated strawberries. In high-density populations, it can also infest wild strawberry varieties. The pests tend to colonize the underside of leaves, young petioles, and flower buds, making them difficult to detect during early stages of infestation.

Biology and life cycle: The species overwinter as eggs deposited on the leaf stalks or at the base of the plant crown. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices, which then reproduce parthenogenetically. Throughout the growing season, multiple generations overlap, leading to a rapid buildup of the aphid population.

Damage and economic impact: Feeding by these aphids causes leaves to curl, yellow, and wither, which stunts the plant's overall growth. However, the most severe economic threat lies in its role as an efficient vector for plant viruses, including strawberry crinkle virus and strawberry mild yellow edge virus, which can ruin entire crops.

  • Systematic monitoring for early infestations during the spring flush.
