Chaoborus, commonly known as the phantom midge, is a genus of dipteran insects belonging to the Chaoboridae family. While the adult midges are harmless to crops and livestock, their aquatic larvae, often called glassworms, act as significant predators within aquatic ecosystems, frequently causing economic losses in fish farming.

Taxonomically, the genus is classified under the order Diptera, family Chaoboridae. These insects are biologically unique due to their specialized hydrostatic organs, consisting of air sacs that provide buoyancy, allowing them to remain suspended in the water column and ambush prey effectively.

The primary damage caused by these insects occurs in aquaculture settings, where they prey upon fish fry and essential zooplankton. By depleting the natural food supply and directly consuming small fish, Chaoborus populations can severely reduce the productivity of nursery ponds and fingerling stocks.

The life cycle encompasses eggs, four larval instars, pupae, and adults. The larvae are notorious for their vertical migration patterns, moving between deep and shallow water depending on light and food availability. This behavior allows them to survive in varying oxygen levels and makes them resilient to many traditional pond management practices.

Effective control measures focus on integrated pond management. Practices such as draining and liming ponds during the off-season help eradicate overwintering larvae from the substrate. Furthermore, stocking predatory fish species that feed on these larvae, alongside maintaining optimal water quality, remains the most reliable strategy for long-term population suppression.
