Charaxes

The genus Charaxes belongs to the family Nymphalidae within the order Lepidoptera. Known as "rajahs" or "pashas," these butterflies are primarily found in tropical regions of Africa and Asia. While most species are not classified as major agricultural pests, certain populations can cause localized damage when they proliferate in commercial nurseries or ornamental gardens.

The host range includes various woody plants and shrubs. Larvae often feed on the foliage of legumes, such as Acacia species, as well as plants within the Rosaceae family. In their native habitats, they may infest young plantings, where larvae consume leaf tissue, potentially affecting the overall vigor of the host plant.

The biological cycle follows the standard lepidopteran stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult (imago). Females oviposit on the host plant. The larvae are notably distinct, often possessing horn-like projections on their heads, which serve as a morphological defense against predators through mimicry. Development time is strictly governed by ambient temperatures and humidity levels.

Damage is characterized by irregular chewing of leaf margins and central leaf tissue. Under heavy infestation pressure, significant defoliation can occur, which weakens the plant and reduces growth rates. For nursery stock, the destruction of terminal buds is particularly detrimental, as it can cause permanent structural deformities in developing trees.
