Two-tailed pasha

Charaxes jasius

Description

The Two-tailed pasha (Charaxes jasius) belongs to the Nymphalidae family within the Lepidoptera order. It is a large, vibrant butterfly species native to the Mediterranean basin and parts of Africa. While highly prized by lepidopterists for its beauty, the larval stage of this butterfly can be considered a pest when it affects specific ornamental or fruit-bearing evergreen trees.

The primary host plant for the larvae is the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo). Larvae are highly host-specific, feeding exclusively on the foliage of this species. In regions where Arbutus is cultivated for ornamental purposes, the presence of these caterpillars can significantly compromise the aesthetic and structural integrity of the plantings if left unchecked.

The life cycle typically spans two generations per year. The larvae overwinter in an early instar stage, anchored firmly to the host plant to survive cooler temperatures. As spring arrives, they resume feeding, grow rapidly, and eventually pupate. The emerging adult butterflies are strong fliers and are active during the warmer months when they mate and lay eggs on the underside of host leaves.

Damage caused by the larvae manifests as defoliation. Early instars create small notches along leaf margins, while older larvae consume significant portions of the leaf blade, often leaving only the central midrib. This intense feeding pattern reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to weakened growth, susceptibility to secondary pathogens, and poor appearance of ornamental specimens.

Effective management begins with regular monitoring of host trees during the spring and summer. For small-scale gardens, hand-picking the larvae is a highly effective and eco-friendly control method. In larger nurseries or ornamental landscapes, the use of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis is recommended to target the larvae during their early development stages, minimizing the need for broad-spectrum chemical interventions.
