Fishfly

The fishfly (Chauliodes pectinicornis) belongs to the order Neuroptera and the family Corydalidae. These insects are easily recognized by their large wingspans and the characteristic pectinate antennae in males. They are most commonly encountered in areas adjacent to freshwater bodies, where their developmental stages take place.

The biology of Chauliodes pectinicornis involves a complex lifecycle with four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in masses on vegetation overhanging water sources. Upon hatching, the larvae drop into the water or saturated soil, where they remain for a significant period before transitioning to the terrestrial pupal stage.

As predators, the larvae primarily consume aquatic invertebrates, but they can occasionally become problematic in agricultural environments. When fields are subjected to flooding or high groundwater levels, larvae can inhabit the root zones of plants, causing mechanical damage by feeding on succulent roots and stems.

The primary damage caused by these pests includes the wilting and secondary infection of roots in water-logged agricultural plots. When larvae feed on young tissues, it results in nutrient uptake disruption and stunted crop growth. Early detection in areas with poor drainage is critical to prevent significant losses in crop yield.
