Plague soldier beetle

The plague soldier beetle (Chauliognathus lugubris) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cantharidae. These beetles are characterized by their soft elytra and a striking black and yellow-orange color pattern. Native to Australia, they often form large, dense swarms during the warmer months, which can be alarming to gardeners and farmers alike.

This beetle species impacts a variety of plant hosts, including fruit trees, native flowering shrubs, and horticultural crops. While the adults feed on nectar and pollen, they are known to consume plant tissues when their populations explode.
