Description
The Briseis butterfly (Chazara briseis) is a species of the Nymphalidae family, belonging to the Satyrinae subfamily. While often observed in meadows and steppe habitats, it is recognized in agronomy as an occasional pest that may cause damage to grasses and cereal crops if populations fluctuate near agricultural zones.
The primary hosts for the larvae of this species are various grasses (Poaceae). In an agricultural setting, the pest is known to target grain fields that are adjacent to fallow lands or untilled field margins where the species maintains its natural breeding cycles. The larval stage is responsible for all plant tissue consumption.
The biological cycle follows a univoltine pattern, meaning it produces one generation per year. The overwintering stage consists of young larvae that remain near the roots of host plants. As temperatures rise in early spring, the larvae emerge to feed actively on the foliage of grasses, coinciding with the critical early growth stages of cereal crops.
Damage caused by the larvae manifests as irregular feeding patterns on leaves. When populations reach high densities, the loss of photosynthetic area severely impacts the vigor of the host plant. This can lead to stunted growth and reduced biomass, which is particularly detrimental to young cereal crops during the spring development phase.
