Cheiloneurus fusciscapus

Cheiloneurus fusciscapus

Description

Cheiloneurus fusciscapus is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Encyrtidae. In professional agronomy, it is recognized primarily as a hyperparasitoid, which means it develops by consuming other beneficial parasitoids, thereby complicating integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in orchards and greenhouses.

This species primarily targets various species of scale insects (Coccidae and Diaspididae) by parasitizing their primary parasitoids. While it does not feed on plant tissues directly, it causes significant indirect damage by reducing the efficacy of biological control agents that growers release to protect their crops from scale infestations.

The biology and lifecycle of Cheiloneurus fusciscapus involve complete metamorphosis. The female adult locates the host (usually a parasitized scale insect) and oviposits within or on it. The larva then develops internally, feeding on the primary parasitoid larva. The speed of the lifecycle is strictly dependent on ambient temperatures, with multiple generations per year occurring in warmer climates.

The damage caused is characterized by the failure of established biological control programs. When this species is present in high numbers, the population of primary, beneficial parasitoids declines, allowing the primary crop pests (the scale insects) to multiply rapidly. This results in decreased crop health and economic losses for the farmer.

Recommended management and mitigation strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring and species identification of parasitoids in the field.
  • Timing the release of primary biocontrol agents to minimize exposure to hyperparasitoids.
  • Selective pesticide use to avoid harming the existing beneficial complex.
  • Maintaining field hygiene to prevent the buildup of pest populations that attract secondary parasites.
