Book scorpion

Chelifer cancroides

Description

Systematic position: The book scorpion (Chelifer cancroides) is a member of the class Arachnida, order Pseudoscorpionida, family Cheliferidae. Although its appearance is intimidating, mimicking a true scorpion, it is a small, harmless arachnid that plays a specific role in the ecosystem of agricultural structures and grain storage facilities.

Nature of damage and pest status: The book scorpion is not a crop pest. It is actually considered a beneficial organism in agricultural settings. It feeds on small arthropods, such as booklice, mites, and larvae of stored-product pests. Therefore, it does not damage plant tissues, fruits, or stored grains, and its presence is often an indicator of other pest populations.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females carry their eggs in a brood sac under their abdomen. The development process is relatively slow and depends heavily on the availability of prey (mites or small insects) and environmental humidity. They are rarely seen due to their nocturnal and secretive behavior.

Ecological significance: These arachnids are synanthropic, often found in libraries, old houses, and grain storage facilities. They prefer undisturbed environments where there is an accumulation of organic debris. In a farming context, their role is that of a natural biological control agent, helping to regulate the populations of mites that might otherwise damage stored products.

Control and Management: Because they are beneficial predators, no specific eradication program is required. If their presence in storage areas is undesirable, simple sanitation practices are the most effective management tools:

  • Maintaining low humidity in grain storage;
  • Regularly cleaning floors and crevices to remove debris;
  • Improving warehouse ventilation;
  • Controlling the primary pests that provide their food source.
