Description
Chirodiscoides caviae is a species of parasitic mite commonly known as the guinea pig fur mite. It is strictly an ectoparasite of guinea pigs and does not affect plants, crops, or agricultural vegetation. Taxonomically, it is classified within the order Sarcoptiformes and the family Atopomelidae.
The biology of this mite is highly specialized for living on the host's hair coat. Unlike burrowing mites, Chirodiscoides caviae lives on the surface of the skin and hair shafts, using specialized appendages to grasp individual hairs. They feed on skin debris, scales, and secretions, which are abundant on the skin of a healthy guinea pig.
The life cycle is entirely completed on the host. Eggs are laid and attached to the hairs, eventually progressing through larval and nymphal stages to reach adulthood. Transmission between hosts is predominantly through direct physical contact, making group-housed animals at high risk if an infestation occurs.
Clinical signs of infestation typically include intense pruritus (itching), scaling, and hair loss, primarily along the dorsal region. While often considered less severe than other mite infestations, the persistent itching significantly impacts the welfare of the animal, leading to self-mutilation and secondary dermatitis.
Treatment protocols involve the use of acaricidal medications, such as ivermectin or selamectin, administered by a veterinarian. Environmental control is also essential, including cleaning and disinfecting habitats to remove any mites shed into the bedding. Proper diagnosis via microscopic examination of hair pluckings is critical for accurate identification.
