Systematic position: The genus Chlorita belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These small insects, commonly known as leafhoppers, are characterized by their slender bodies and jumping capabilities, which often makes them difficult to spot during the early stages of infestation.
Host plants: This pest exhibits broad trophic specialization. While it causes the most significant economic damage to vineyards, it is also frequently found on fruit trees, various berry bushes, and certain herbaceous plants, where it feeds by sucking sap from leaf tissues.
Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle includes an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Depending on the climatic zone, the species can produce one or more generations per year. Adults typically overwinter in plant debris or under bark, becoming active as soon as stable, warmer temperatures arrive in the spring.
Nature of damage: Feeding by Chlorita results in the appearance of characteristic pale dots or chlorotic spots on the leaves, which may eventually coalesce. This process disrupts photosynthesis, leading to premature yellowing and leaf drop, significantly reducing both the quantity and quality of the harvest.
Control measures require an integrated approach:
- Proper sanitation of orchards by removing weeds and fallen leaves where adults overwinter.
- Use of pheromone and sticky traps for monitoring population density.
- Application of biological pesticides based on entomopathogenic fungi.
- Chemical control using systemic insecticides when infestation levels exceed the economic threshold.
