Description
Systematic position. Chloropelix canariensis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae (mealybugs). It is a specialized pest that has evolved to thrive on specific palm hosts, making it a significant challenge for arborists and park managers in Mediterranean and subtropical climates.
Affected crops. This pest primarily infests palm species, most notably the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) and Washingtonia palms. Its presence is often detected in botanical gardens, urban landscaping, and commercial plant nurseries that export ornamental palms.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, several nymphal stages, and the adult phase. Adult females are protected by a white waxy secretion, which acts as a barrier against environmental stressors and many traditional pesticides. The pest tends to inhabit sheltered areas of the palm, such as the crown and leaf bases.
Damage and harmfulness. By feeding on plant sap, the insects weaken the palm, leading to leaf yellowing (chlorosis) and stunted growth. The honeydew excreted by the mealybugs encourages the growth of sooty mold, which coats the fronds and significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, often leading to aesthetic and physiological decline.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Control strategies include:
- Systemic insecticide applications that reach the vascular system.
- High-pressure water washing to physically remove wax-covered colonies.
