Grape leaf skeletonizer moth

Choreutis vinosa

Description

The Grape leaf skeletonizer moth (Choreutis vinosa) is a small insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Choreutidae. This species is recognized as a pest in various viticulture regions, where its larvae feed specifically on the foliage and reproductive structures of grapevine plants.

The host range of Choreutis vinosa is primarily centered on members of the Vitaceae family. While they prefer cultivated vineyards, they can thrive on wild Vitis species, which often serve as reservoirs for the pest, allowing populations to persist and spread to commercial plantings if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of the moth consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are generally nocturnal. Eggs are deposited on the undersides of leaves or near the buds. Once hatched, the larvae begin to feed, progressing through several instars before constructing a silken cocoon in which they pupate, often hidden within folded leaves or beneath the bark of the vine.

The damage caused by these larvae is characterized by leaf skeletonization, where the insect consumes the leaf tissue but leaves the harder veins intact. In cases of high infestation, the larvae may also target flowers and small berries. This damage results in reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth of shoots, and overall degradation of the grapevine health, leading to yield losses.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include:

  • Mechanical removal and destruction of infested leaves and debris during pruning.
  • Application of biological insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, during the early larval stages.
  • Use of pheromone traps for monitoring flight activity and population density.
  • Judicious use of chemical insecticides as a last resort, ensuring they are applied according to safety guidelines.
  • Enhancing vineyard ventilation through proper canopy management to make conditions less favorable for the pest.
