Chorizagrotis

Chorizagrotis is a genus of moths belonging to the family Noctuidae (order Lepidoptera). These insects are commonly referred to as cutworms due to the feeding habits of their larvae. They are recognized worldwide as significant agricultural pests capable of causing widespread damage to various crops, especially during the early seedling stage.

The host range for this genus is extensive, affecting small grains like wheat, barley, and oats, as well as various broadleaf plants, forage crops, and vegetables. By feeding on the base of stems and leaves, these larvae can drastically reduce plant stand density, leading to substantial reductions in overall yield and farm profitability.

The biology and development of Chorizagrotis species vary based on geographic region, but they typically spend the winter as larvae in the soil or protected under crop debris. As temperatures rise in the spring, larvae emerge to resume feeding. Their nocturnal behavior allows them to avoid heat and predators during the day, making early detection critical.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to their ability to sever stems at or just below the soil line. This behavior causes the plants to lodge, wilt, and eventually die. Because the larvae are often hidden beneath the soil surface or surface trash, the extent of the infestation is frequently underestimated until significant damage has already occurred.
