Chorthippus
Description
The genus Chorthippus belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. These insects are widely distributed in temperate zones and are often considered significant agricultural pests, particularly during years of outbreaks when their populations increase dramatically.
This pest primarily attacks cereal crops, including wheat, barley, oats, and rye, as well as forage crops like clover and alfalfa. When population densities are high, grasshoppers can completely defoliate crops during early growth stages, consuming both leaves and stems.
The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs overwinter in the soil in pods. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs go through five instars, feeding voraciously on local vegetation. The cycle is typically univoltine, with the peak of damage occurring in mid-to-late summer when adults are most active.
Damage symptoms include irregular, ragged feeding patterns on leaf margins. In severe infestations, the insects may consume the entire plant down to the soil level, leading to significant yield loss. Their ability to swarm and migrate from field to field makes them a serious threat to regional crop production.
Control measures rely on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Deep autumn plowing is recommended to destroy egg pods stored in the soil. When monitoring indicates that populations exceed economic thresholds (typically 2–5 individuals per square meter), insecticide applications using pyrethroids or organophosphates are necessary to protect the crops.
