Meadow grasshopper

Chorthippus dorsatus

Description

The meadow grasshopper (Chorthippus dorsatus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. As a non-migratory grasshopper species, it thrives in grassland ecosystems but can become a significant agricultural pest when environmental conditions favor mass reproduction. Its coloration varies from brown to vivid green, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the dense vegetation of its habitat.

This species primarily inhabits meadows and pastures, but at high population densities, it migrates to adjacent agricultural fields. It poses a threat to cereal grains, maize, forage legumes, and various vegetables. Both nymphs and adults are highly mobile and consume large amounts of foliage, which weakens the plants, hinders their growth, and leads to substantial yield reductions.

The life cycle of Chorthippus dorsatus follows incomplete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs in clusters (egg pods) within the soil at a shallow depth during late summer. These eggs overwinter in the soil. In spring, nymphs emerge and undergo five instar stages, feeding aggressively on available plant tissues. By mid-summer, the adults emerge, mate, and begin the process of depositing eggs for the next generation.

Damage symptoms include irregular holes and shredded leaf edges. In severe infestations, the grasshopper can defoliate entire plants, leaving only the stalks. This is particularly devastating during drought years when natural grasses dry up and populations are forced to seek moisture and nutrients in irrigated or succulent crops. The loss of leaf area directly impacts the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling this species. Cultural practices, such as autumn plowing, are highly effective as they destroy the egg pods buried in the soil. When monitoring indicates that populations exceed economic injury levels, targeted application of insecticides, such as pyrethroids or organophosphates, is recommended to mitigate further damage to the crops.
