Meadow grasshopper

The meadow grasshopper (lat. Chorthippus parallelus) is a member of the Orthoptera order, specifically the Acrididae family. It is a common insect found in grasslands, meadows, and cereal fields. While it is not a migratory locust, it can cause significant local damage to agricultural resources when population densities peak, particularly in favorable weather conditions.

This pest primarily targets Gramineae plants. It feeds on both wild grasses and cultivated cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. In pasture environments, it reduces the quantity and quality of forage, directly impacting livestock feed availability. Agricultural fields near grassy areas are the most susceptible to infestations during the summer months.

The life cycle of this species consists of an egg stage (overwintering in the soil), several nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Eggs are laid in pods within the ground, usually at the end of the summer season. In spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding immediately, gradually progressing through stages until reaching maturity, at which point they become capable of flight and reproduction.

Damage occurs when both nymphs and adults consume leaf tissue. They bite into the edges of leaves, causing irregular, jagged damage. In severe cases of infestation, entire leaves can be stripped away, leaving only the midrib. This loss of photosynthetic area severely hinders plant development, stunts growth, and can result in significant yield losses for farmers if left unmanaged.

Effective management strategies should focus on preventive agronomic practices and reactive control measures:

• Deep autumn plowing to destroy egg pods buried in the soil.
• Regular mowing of field margins and fallow lands to reduce habitat and food supply.
• Monitoring of grasshopper density to determine the necessity of chemical treatment.
• Application of approved insecticides when population levels exceed the economic threshold.
