Yersin's grasshopper

Yersin's grasshopper (Chorthippus yersini) is a species of short-horned grasshopper belonging to the family Acrididae. As a herbivorous insect, it thrives in open grassland and meadow habitats, often encroaching on agricultural lands where it can become a localized pest of significant concern to producers of grain and fodder crops.

The primary crops affected by this species include various cereals (wheat, barley, rye) and grasses. While they show a preference for wild meadows, they will readily feed on cultivated grains during the vegetative stages, as well as on vegetable crops and technical plants if their natural feeding environment is disturbed by climate factors or agricultural disruption.

The life cycle of Chorthippus yersini involves incomplete metamorphosis. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, which is deposited in soil egg pods. Spring hatchlings emerge as the soil warms, typically aligning with the early growth phases of spring and winter crops. The nymphs undergo several molts before reaching the adult stage, at which point they become capable of flight and rapid dispersion.

The damage caused is primarily through the consumption of foliage, leading to reduced photosynthetic area and plant vigor. High population densities result in severe defoliation, which can stunt crop development and cause measurable yield losses. In extreme cases, complete stripping of leaf tissue leaves plants unable to reach physiological maturity, negatively impacting harvest quality and quantity.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Yersin's grasshopper outbreaks effectively. Recommended strategies include:

• Tillage practices, such as deep plowing, to destroy soil-embedded egg pods.
• Regular field monitoring to detect early-stage nymphs before they spread.
• Chemical control using approved insecticides when population levels exceed economic thresholds.
• Management of field margins and fallow lands to reduce breeding habitats.
• Enhancing the presence of natural predators to provide biological regulation.
