Australian plague locust

Chortoicetes

Description

The Australian plague locust (scientific name: Chortoicetes terminifera) is a major agricultural pest belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. It is native to Australia and is infamous for its gregarious behavior, where individuals congregate into massive swarms that travel across the continent, causing extensive destruction to vegetation.

This pest attacks a wide range of crops and pastures, including wheat, barley, sorghum, and various forage grasses. Both the nymph (hopper) stages and the adult locusts consume green plant tissue aggressively. In high-density outbreak years, they can defoliate entire fields, leaving farmers with total crop failure and severe economic losses.

The biology of the species is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly rainfall and soil moisture. The life cycle begins with eggs laid in the soil, followed by five nymphal stages (instars) before reaching maturity. Their ability to rapidly increase in population density under favorable weather conditions makes them difficult to contain once swarming begins.

The damage caused by the Australian plague locust is characterized by the stripping of foliage, stems, and seed heads. The pest is particularly damaging to young, succulent crops, and their swarming habit allows them to move from one field to another, decimating agricultural production over vast geographical areas in a very short amount of time.

Effective management and control measures include:

  • Continuous surveillance and mapping of nymphal bands to identify outbreaks early.
  • Targeted application of chemical insecticides at the nymphal stage before insects develop flight.
  • Cultural practices, such as deep tillage of soil, to disturb and destroy egg-laying sites.
  • Utilization of biological control agents, such as specialized fungal pathogens, to suppress populations.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to balance chemical use with environmental sustainability.
