Description

The Chortophaga viridifasciata, commonly known as the green-striped grasshopper, is a widespread member of the Acrididae family. It is a highly adaptable insect that thrives in pastures, grasslands, and cultivated fields, often becoming a significant pest in agricultural settings during years of peak population.

This pest is known to feed on a wide variety of plants, particularly graminoid crops, including wheat, corn, and forage grasses. They are opportunistic feeders that consume foliage and stems, often leading to patchy defoliation across fields, which significantly impacts the development and biomass production of the affected crops.

The life cycle typically includes one or two generations per year, with overwintering occurring in the nymphal stage. As temperatures rise in early spring, these nymphs resume feeding and maturation. By late spring or early summer, the adults emerge, mate, and lay eggs into the soil, starting the next generation.

Damage caused by Chortophaga is primarily mechanical, as they scrape and devour leaf tissue. The harm is most severe during early plant growth stages. If the population density is high, the grasshoppers can cause widespread thinning of crop stands, leading to yield reductions that jeopardize farm profitability.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this insect. Strategies include:

  • Early spring field scouting to identify nymph clusters.
  • Deep plowing to destroy egg pods buried in the soil.
  • Maintenance of clean field borders to reduce alternative host plants.
