Honeysuckle leaf miner

The honeysuckle leaf miner (Chromatomyia lonicerae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera, family Agromyzidae. It is a well-known pest that primarily targets honeysuckle plants (Lonicera species), causing significant visual and physiological damage to the foliage of the host plants.

The insect is host-specific, primarily infesting various species of honeysuckle. It is widely distributed across temperate regions. The pest thrives in environments where honeysuckle is grown, whether in wild stands, commercial fruit orchards, or ornamental garden landscapes, often exploiting the plant's resources during the entire growing season.

The biological cycle of Chromatomyia lonicerae is complex and tightly integrated with the plant's phenology. Adults lay eggs beneath the leaf epidermis. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the leaf's mesophyll tissue, creating distinctive tracks. The development process includes larval stages, pupation, and the emergence of adult flies, with several generations often occurring per year depending on the climate.

The characteristic damage caused by the larvae is in the form of serpentine mines on the leaves. These tracks prevent proper leaf function, leading to yellowing, necrosis, and premature leaf drop.
