The cereal leaf miner (Chromatomyia nigra) is an insect pest belonging to the Agromyzidae family of the order Diptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of various cereal crops, causing agricultural losses due to its specific feeding habits on the leaf tissue of host plants.

This species primarily infests plants in the Poaceae family. Important host crops include wheat, barley, rye, and oats, alongside various wild grasses. The pest is particularly attracted to young, developing foliage, where the soft tissue provides optimal conditions for larval nutrition and growth.

The biological cycle of Chromatomyia nigra consists of several generations per year depending on the climate. Females oviposit into the leaf epidermis. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the parenchyma, creating characteristic serpentine tunnels known as mines. Pupation usually occurs within the leaf tissue or in the surface layers of the soil.

Damage caused by the cereal leaf miner involves the destruction of internal leaf layers, leading to chlorosis, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and overall plant vigor decline.
