Description
The chrysanthemum leaf miner (Chromatomyia syngenesiae) is a fly species belonging to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets Asteraceae plants, causing significant economic damage in both commercial floriculture and greenhouse vegetable production.
The host range is broad, affecting popular ornamental plants like chrysanthemums, cinerarias, and gerberas, as well as vegetables such as lettuce. The pest thrives in greenhouse environments, where optimal temperatures allow it to complete multiple generations throughout the entire year.
The life cycle progresses through the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult females insert their eggs into the leaf tissue. Once the larvae hatch, they begin to mine the leaf, moving between the upper and lower epidermis. This behavior creates the characteristic wandering, whitish trails on the surface of the foliage.
Damage is characterized by aesthetic decline and physiological stress. As mines merge, the leaves become discolored, necrotic, and eventually drop off.
