Chrotogonus

Chrotogonus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Pyrgomorphidae. Often referred to as "toad grasshoppers" or surface grasshoppers, these insects are characterized by their squat, robust appearance and roughened, tuberculate cuticle, which provides excellent camouflage against dry soil and leaf litter.

These pests primarily target a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, cotton, legumes, and various vegetables. Because they often reside on the soil surface, they are particularly dangerous to seedlings and young plants, frequently severing stems at the base or defoliating the plants completely during the early stages of growth.

The biology of Chrotogonus is well-adapted to arid and semi-arid environments. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis. Females deposit egg pods in the soil, which are resilient to drought conditions and may remain dormant until moisture triggers egg hatching. Nymphs closely resemble the adults but lack wings, and their feeding activity increases exponentially as they grow through several instars.

The damage caused by Chrotogonus can be severe in regions where these insects occur in high densities. Beyond the loss of biomass, the wounds inflicted by the insects create entry points for secondary infections by pathogens. Infested fields often show patchy growth or complete destruction of stands, leading to significant economic losses for farmers if left unmanaged.

Effective control strategies include:

• Deep plowing and soil cultivation to destroy egg pods and expose nymphs to predators.
• Maintaining weed-free borders around agricultural fields to reduce nesting habitats.
• Application of approved contact or systemic insecticides during the peak hatching season.
• Biological control options, such as the use of entomopathogenic fungi, which can be effective in humid conditions.
