The Senegalese grasshopper (Chrotogonus senegalensis) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Pamphagidae. Commonly known for its presence across Sub-Saharan Africa, this insect has earned a reputation for causing localized but severe damage to staple food and cash crops in tropical and arid regions.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a diverse range of host plants. It is particularly notorious for damaging sorghum, pearl millet, maize, cotton, and cowpeas. The grasshopper is known for targeting seedlings, often resulting in complete crop failure if left unmanaged during the critical early growth stages of the season.

The biological cycle of Chrotogonus senegalensis is highly adaptive. Females deposit egg pods in the soil, which are resilient to dry periods. As environmental conditions improve with rainfall, the nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately. Their morphology, characterized by a flattened, rough body, allows them to blend perfectly with the soil surface and plant debris, making them difficult to detect.

The feeding pattern of the grasshopper causes significant defoliation and tissue destruction. By consuming the leaves and stems of young plants, they impede photosynthetic activity and stunt the development of the crop. The intensity of damage is exacerbated when large populations aggregate, which can decimate an entire field in a matter of days if conditions favor rapid reproduction.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended strategies include:
