Chrysonotomyia

Description

Chrysonotomyia is a genus of tiny wasps belonging to the family Eulophidae within the order Hymenoptera. While many members of this family serve as beneficial parasitoids, certain species within the Chrysonotomyia genus are recognized as significant pests that cause damage to leaves of various ornamental and agricultural crops by disrupting plant tissue development.

This pest primarily infests a variety of hosts, with high vulnerability noted in vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as ornamentals including chrysanthemums and gerberas. The infestation is particularly problematic in greenhouses and nurseries where controlled environments provide ideal conditions for the rapid population growth of these small insects throughout the year.

The life cycle of Chrysonotomyia consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically oviposit on or within the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed internally on the leaf parenchyma. This internal feeding activity is characteristic of the genus and allows the larvae to remain protected from external environmental factors while actively consuming the plant material.

The damage caused by Chrysonotomyia is evidenced by the formation of irregular blotches, mines, and chlorotic patches on the leaf surface. As the infestation progresses, these lesions merge, leading to necrotic areas, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and often premature leaf drop. Severe outbreaks significantly weaken the plant, which negatively impacts flower production and overall crop yield quality.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Essential steps include:

  • Monitoring crop fields using yellow sticky traps to detect early activity.
  • Strict sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infested plant material.
  • Application of systemic insecticides when threshold levels are reached.
  • Encouraging natural biological controls where feasible to maintain population balance.
