Description
Chrysopa cockerelli, known as the Cockerell lacewing, is a member of the order Neuroptera and the family Chrysopidae. While many green lacewings are valued as beneficial predators, this specific species can become problematic in intensive agricultural environments if pest populations are not balanced correctly.
This insect primarily infests a variety of vegetable, ornamental, and fruit crops. Its presence is often associated with the honeydew produced by secondary pests like aphids or whiteflies. As the lacewings feed on this substance, they contribute to the spread of sooty mold, which negatively impacts the crop's aesthetic and physiological state.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on long, thin stalks, a characteristic trait designed to protect the developing offspring from predators. The larvae are voracious feeders and pass through three larval instars before constructing a silk cocoon for pupation.

High densities lead to contamination of leaves with honeydew and fungal growth, which inhibits photosynthesis and weakens the plant.
