Cicadulina leafhopper

The genus Cicadulina, belonging to the family Cicadellidae (order Hemiptera), comprises several species of leafhoppers that are significant agricultural pests. These insects are particularly infamous for their role as vectors of devastating plant viruses, most notably the Maize Streak Virus (MSV), which poses a constant threat to cereal production in tropical and subtropical regions.

Taxonomically, these leafhoppers are categorized within the leafhopper family. They are small, wedge-shaped insects that are highly mobile. Both adults and nymphs possess piercing-sucking mouthparts, allowing them to feed on the phloem sap of host plants, which include maize, sorghum, millet, and various grasses.

The life cycle of Cicadulina follows a hemimetabolous pattern, consisting of the egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Eggs are inserted into the leaf tissue, protecting them during the embryonic development. The speed of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the development and increasing the number of generations produced per growing season.

Damage caused by these pests is two-fold. Firstly, direct feeding causes leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and general physiological weakness of the plant. Secondly, and more critically, they act as primary vectors for viral pathogens. The acquisition of the virus occurs during feeding, and the leafhopper remains a vector for the rest of its life, effectively spreading the infection across fields as it moves from plant to plant.

Management and control measures must be integrated to be effective:

• Cultivation of resistant or tolerant crop varieties specifically bred for virus resistance.
• Removal of alternative host grasses that harbor both the virus and the insect population.
• Strategic timing of planting to avoid peak insect activity periods during early crop development.
• Application of systemic insecticides, particularly as seed treatments to protect young plants.
• Field monitoring to determine the timing for foliar insecticide applications based on economic thresholds.
