The groundnut leafhopper (Cicadulina arachidis) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is primarily recognized for its impact on agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, where it causes substantial economic damage to groundnut production and various cereal crops.
This pest mainly infests the groundnut (peanut) plant but is also found on alternative hosts, including various species of Poaceae. By colonizing these plants, the leafhopper not only reduces plant vigor through sap extraction but also facilitates the spread of serious plant diseases across agricultural fields.
The biology of the species follows a classic hemimetabolous development cycle: egg, nymph, and adult. The lifecycle is highly influenced by ambient temperature and moisture, allowing for multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season. Females typically insert their eggs into the leaf tissue, ensuring protection for the developing offspring.
The damage caused by Cicadulina arachidis is twofold. Direct damage involves tissue yellowing and wilting due to intensive feeding. Indirect damage, which is far more severe, stems from the leafhopper's role as a vector for viruses, such as the groundnut rosette virus, which induces stunting and prevents the formation of healthy pods.
