Description
Systematic position: The maize leafhopper (Cicadulina bimaculata) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Cicadellidae family. This insect is a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly known for its role as a vector for various plant pathogens that negatively impact cereal production.
Host crops: This pest primarily infests members of the Poaceae family. Maize is its most significant host, but it also readily feeds on sorghum, pearl millet, wheat, and various grasses. Its ability to thrive on a wide range of monocots makes it a persistent threat in many agricultural regions.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are inserted into the leaf tissue of the host plants. The nymphs go through several instars before reaching adulthood. Under optimal warm temperatures, the population can increase rapidly, leading to multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season.
Nature of damage and harmfulness: Direct damage occurs when both nymphs and adults pierce plant tissues to suck sap, causing stunting and yellowing of leaves. However, the most severe economic impact stems from its ability to transmit the Maize Streak Virus (MSV). This virus causes chlorotic streaks, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete loss of crop yield.
