The Maize leafhopper (Cicadulina mbila) is a destructive insect belonging to the order Hemiptera, family Cicadellidae. It is widely recognized in agronomy as a primary vector for the Maize Streak Virus (MSV), which poses a severe threat to cereal production in tropical and subtropical regions.
The primary damage caused by Cicadulina mbila is indirect; while direct feeding on sap can cause minor localized stress, the transmission of the MSV pathogen is devastating. The virus restricts plant growth, resulting in stunted development and significantly reduced yields of maize and related cereal crops.
