Maize leafhopper

The maize leafhopper (Cicadulina parazeae) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where it poses a persistent threat to cereal production through direct feeding and disease transmission.

While corn (maize) serves as its primary host, Cicadulina parazeae exhibits a broad host range. It frequently infests other cereal crops including sorghum, pearl millet, wheat, and barley. Furthermore, various wild grasses act as essential reservoirs that allow the population to persist and multiply during the off-season or following crop harvest.

The life cycle of the leafhopper is characterized by incomplete metamorphosis. Both nymphs and adults inhabit the underside of leaves, feeding on plant sap. The eggs are typically laid within the leaf tissue, which protects the developing embryos from environmental stress and natural enemies until the nymphs hatch and begin to feed.

Direct damage occurs as the insects feed, leading to necrotic spots and stunted growth. However, the most critical damage is indirect; the leafhopper is the primary vector for the Maize Streak Virus (MSV). Feeding by even a small number of infected individuals can inoculate the plants with the virus, leading to severe yield loss and quality degradation across entire fields.

An integrated pest management (IPM) approach is essential to control this insect:

• Utilization of maize hybrids that possess natural resistance or tolerance to the Maize Streak Virus.
• Strategic planting times to avoid overlapping the most vulnerable crop stage with the peak population flight of the leafhopper.
• Application of systemic insecticides via seed treatments to protect seedlings during the crucial early growth phases.
• Regular monitoring of edge vegetation and rapid eradication of alternate host grasses.
• Judicious use of chemical sprays in the surrounding area to break the infestation cycle before it reaches the main crop.
