Cicadulina similis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that poses a serious threat to various crops, particularly in warm regions where environmental conditions favor rapid population growth and continuous reproductive cycles throughout the season.

The primary host plants for this leafhopper include essential cereal crops. Cicadulina similis causes the most severe damage to maize, wheat, millet, and sorghum. Additionally, the pest can thrive on various wild grasses, which act as alternative hosts and reservoirs for the population during the off-season or when cultivated crops are unavailable.

The biology of the pest is highly dependent on temperature. Multiple generations can occur within a single year. Females deposit eggs directly into the leaf or stem tissue of host plants. Nymphs pass through several developmental stages and resemble the adult insects, though they lack wings and are strictly associated with feeding on plant sap to fuel their growth.

The economic impact of Cicadulina similis is twofold. First, direct feeding damage occurs as the insects extract cell sap, which causes stunted growth, chlorosis, and leaf curling. Second, and perhaps more significantly, the leafhopper acts as a primary vector for dangerous plant viruses, such as maize streak virus, which can decimate yields across entire fields if left unmanaged.
